Plywood Coamings (top) are made from 2 or 3 separate pieces with guide holes and pegs for proper assembly. This one looks a bit bulky because it scaled down for a kids size kayak. For a nicer look other plywoods like Mahogany are used.
Steam Bent Coamings (bottom) consist of two bent pieces that are glued together after bending. We mainly use Ash for coamings because it is tough and bends well. Accent pieces of wood can be added for more detail but can also add considerable extra time to the making.
